Republic Day 2024

26th January: 26th January means the Republic Day of the people of India. This is a day that is important for every Indian citizen. When India became truly independent and democracy was embraced. The day our constitution came into force. We are celebrating our 75th Republic Day in 2024.

History of Republic Day

On 26 January 1950, almost 3 years after independence, we became a sovereign, secular, socialist, democratic republic. On August 15 , 1947 i.e. Republic Day British rule came to an end but still our country lacked a good constitution. Moreover, India also lacked experts and political leaders who could help the state run the country in an orderly manner. Therefore, it became imperative to frame a unique constitution that would be tailored for India to help govern the country as a whole.

After that, through tireless efforts and dignitaries studied the constitution of different countries and met with all the people in which special contribution was made by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s. And finally on August 28, 1947, after 166 years of hard work, the constitution was made. After drafting, it was presented to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947 by the same committee.

Besides, on 26th January the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was. Thus, this day is very important as it marks the end of British rule and the birth of India as a republican state.

Importance of Republic Day

Celebrating 26th January for a long time Since around 1950, 26th January is celebrated as a day in India but why 26th January? Let’s know the importance of the day.

In Indian history, during and after independence, there was a constant debate about how India and the younger generation could live a peaceful life well.

A republic, when India had no constitution of its own after independence in 1947, was adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949 and came into force on 26 January 1950.

The Constitution replaced the Government of India Act 1935 as the country’s basic administrative document and contained a text for all castes. Our Dominion of India became the Republic of India. To ensure constitutional independence, several of its framers repealed all previous acts of the British Parliament in Article 395. So India celebrates 26th January as Republic Day in implementation of its Constitution.

Celebration of Republic Day In India

In India, January 26 is celebrated with great pomp and show. On that day, there is a public holiday in India. Schools, colleges and offices have a holiday. The Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi.

Then the National Anthem is sung and the Army Navy Air Force salutes the flag, and they are felicitated, the Hon’ble Prime Minister gives a speech, the magnificent parade in the country is held, which takes place on the Rajpath of Delhi, showcasing the country’s rich and cultural heritage. And, the entire program is under the President, followed by a 21-gun salute and various awards to the soldiers.

Cultural programs include flag salutations and celebrations by students in schools. Patriotic songs, programs, movies, etc. are broadcasted on TV, Radio, etc.
